What is Flare?
Flare is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain built for cross-chain data acquisition. Its native infrastructure — oracles, state connectors, and smart accounts — makes it uniquely suited for bridging external data and assets into onchain applications.
The data problem
Blockchains are isolated by design. They can't natively access data from other chains or the real world. This limitation restricts what smart contracts can do.
Most chains solve this through third-party oracle networks. Flare takes a different approach: data acquisition is built into the protocol itself. The Flare Time Series Oracle (FTSO) and State Connector are native infrastructure, not external dependencies.
Native oracles
The FTSO delivers decentralized price feeds directly from the Flare network. Data providers submit prices, and the network reaches consensus without relying on a single oracle provider.
The State Connector enables Flare to verify events on other blockchains. This allows trustless bridging — proving that something happened on Bitcoin or XRP Ledger without centralized attesters.
FXRP is Flare's wrapped representation of XRP. Through the State Connector and FAssets system, XRP holders can bring their assets to Flare and access DeFi — lending, trading, yield — that isn't available on the XRP Ledger natively.
Smart accounts and Xaman
Flare Smart Accounts allow non-custodial access to Flare DeFi from existing wallets. Combined with Xaman (formerly Xumm), XRP users can interact with Flare protocols without managing a separate wallet or seed phrase.
This integration is a key distribution channel. Millions of XRP holders can access Flare yield opportunities through an interface they already use.
earnXRP vault
The earnXRP vault, powered by Upshift and managed by Clearstar, deploys FXRP across Flare's DeFi ecosystem. The vault supplies FXRP as collateral, borrows stablecoins, and redeploys into yield opportunities.
Current TVL exceeds $37M, with allocations across Morpho, Enosys, SparkDEX, and Curvance. Health rates on lending positions are maintained between 1.39 and 1.84 — capital preservation first, yield second.
Clearstar manages strategy execution across 9 chains and 12+ protocols, with continuous monitoring and parameter adjustments based on market conditions.
The DeFi ecosystem
Flare's DeFi ecosystem includes native lending (Enosys), DEXs (SparkDEX, BlazeSwap), and external deployments like Morpho. The combination of native oracle infrastructure and EVM compatibility attracts protocols looking for reliable data feeds.
For yield seekers, Flare offers access to strategies that combine native FTSO data, cross-chain assets via FAssets, and established DeFi primitives — a unique combination not available on other L1s.
Risks to understand
Bridge risk exists when using FXRP or other FAssets. The security of wrapped assets depends on the FAssets system and State Connector operating correctly.
Ecosystem maturity means Flare's DeFi protocols are newer than those on Ethereum. Less battle-testing means more unknown unknowns.
Liquidity concentration in certain pools can affect exits during high-volume periods.
